Affair

Why the hell was I here? I thought, shrinking back into the corner of the room beside the crackers and cheese plate. I shoved a couple in my mouth, and despite the fact that they tasted like sawdust, I continued to stuff my face in the hopes I would look busy enough that people wouldn’t talk to me. I saw, with no small amount of disappointment, that I was completely wrong. A tall woman in an uncomfortably close-fitting dress approached me with a smile not unlike the Joker’s.
“Hello, you must be Noah,” She said charmingly. I tried to hold back my disgust.
“And you must be Evelyn,” I muttered less than enthusiastically. “The girl my dad’s having an affair with.” Blunt, maybe, but I wasn’t in the mood for civilities.
Evelyn pursed her blood red lips and looked like she was trying to hold back her extreme distaste. “That would be me,” She said coldly and flipped her hair like she was trying to maintain her composure. I caught a whiff of some perfume that was so strong that I barely managed to hide my gag. “Have you seen your father?”
“That’s it?” I asked, unable to mask my anger. “You’re just going to pretend that it’s totally fine and normal that my dad is sleeping with you and cheating on my mom?”
Evelyn scoffed. “You speak as if they’re still in love. As if their marriage was still working and healthy.” Her sneer made me want to punch her. My fists already throbbed from my constant clenching.
“And you speak as if you even know them,” I hissed back. “As though they mean anything to you. All you are is a gold digger and you know it!” I immediately regretted it as soon as the words left my lips.
My father’s mistress gasped in shock and gripped my shoulder suddenly with surprising strength. “You little-“ She was cut off by an equally tall figure in a pristine suit.
“That’s enough,” My dad said sternly, glancing to either side where our little argument was attracting the attention of some of the guests. “A house party is not the time to discuss such things.”
Anger boiled inside me, spilling out into every vein in my body. “This isn’t your home!” I shouted, glaring fiercely at him. “This is the house you bought for your fucking mistress! Now excuse me, I can’t take this bullshit anymore!” I pushed past the gawking guests and ran out of the building, tears leaking out of the corners of my eyes and sliding down my cheeks.
